Notebooks are finding their way into gym bags across Dubai, with local wellness coaches and fitness centres reporting a spike in interest for journaling as a way to practise mindfulness. From Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR) to Downtown Dubai, classes and workshops dedicated to this self-reflective technique have sprouted up in the last year, drawing in everyone from overworked professionals to university students.
Why the sudden appeal? Dubai’s relentless pace, with its late-night work emails, bustling Sheikh Zayed Road commutes, and a social calendar packed even through the summer heat, means stress is woven into daily city life. Many residents are searching for simple, practical tools to bolster their mental wellbeing and regain a sense of control. Journaling, a cornerstone of mindfulness, offers an accessible antidote, requiring no expensive equipment or lengthy appointment waitlists.
At Marina Walk, several wellness studios, such as Infinity Wellness (located near Pier 7), have started integrating guided journaling into their group meditation sessions. Meanwhile, The Lighthouse Studio in Alserkal Avenue now offers bi-weekly ‘Mindful Writing’ circles, providing residents a quiet, creative space to reflect and regroup after work. Even boutique cafés on City Walk are tapping into the trend: ‘Open Pen’ at Caffeine Lab invites patrons to sip matcha and pen gratitude lists each Friday morning-attracting both locals and expats taking part in the Dubai Fitness Challenge 30x30.
Dr. Noor Al Karam, a licensed Dubai psychologist, said in a recent DHA public forum that structured journaling can lower anxiety and increase focus-echoing trends seen in global urban centres. Smart practices, such as ‘micro-journaling’ (scribbling 3 prompts before leaving the house), have been credited by local wellness groups like Mindful Living DXB for helping over 1,000 members since 2025.
Regional numbers reflect the growing popularity. According to ClassPass Middle East, bookings for mindfulness and journaling workshops in Dubai rose by 41% between June 2025 and June 2026. One-hour guided journal sessions average AED 65 at venues such as House of Wisdom in Al Jaddaf or the community rooms at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). For many, the attraction lies in journaling’s flexibility: it can be done solo at Safa Park, during a break at Emirates Towers, or under the shade of a palm tree at Kite Beach.
Getting started is simple. Dubai libraries and many fitness studios offer free or affordable beginner workshops, especially during the annual November Dubai Fitness Challenge. Wellness coaches advise newcomers to start with undemanding exercises: jot down three things you’re grateful for, describe your mood in five words, or set an intention for the day on a blank page. Digital tools-such as the Mindwell Arabia app, launched in May 2026-offer daily journaling prompts in both English and Arabic for less than AED 15 per month.
As Dubai’s wellness calendar fills up with meditation pop-ups and community runs, journaling is carving its own space alongside sunrise yoga at The Meadows or HIIT at The Warehouse Gym. For those feeling overwhelmed by the city’s fast pace, picking up pen and paper could be the smallest, most impactful step toward a calmer, more joyful day.
For anyone considering any mindfulness practice, it’s always recommended to consult a local healthcare professional about personal mental health needs.
