Gold Souk and Spice Souk: Dubai's Ancient Market Quarter

The Gold Souk and Spice Souk in Deira represent Dubai before the skyscrapers — a dense labyrinth of covered lanes and merchant stalls that has traded continuously for more than a century. The Gold Souk on the north side of the Dubai Creek is the world's largest gold market, with more than 300 retailers displaying extraordinary quantities of jewellery under the vaulted wooden roof of its main arcade. Gold is sold by weight at prices that fluctuate daily with international rates, and bargaining is both expected and enjoyed by all parties.

Window shopping alone is an experience — the sheer volume and variety of gold jewellery on display, from delicate Indian sets to Gulf-style statement pieces, is unlike anything available in a shopping mall. The Spice Souk is a short walk along the waterfront toward the creek — its open sacks of saffron, cardamom, dried limes, frankincense, and oud create an olfactory experience that lingers long after you leave. Vendors here are patient guides to their products, explaining the differences between grades of saffron and the medicinal uses of specific roots.

Cross the creek by traditional abra (water taxi) for less than one dirham to explore the textile and electronics souks of Bur Dubai on the south bank. The creek crossing itself is one of Dubai's most atmospheric experiences — wooden boats loaded with goods moving between the two banks in a scene unchanged for generations. The abra stations on both sides operate continuously from early morning until late evening, carrying commuters and tourists alike in vessels that have changed little in design over a century of use.
